AH! Embrace

My name is Uzma Sufi. My skills and areas of expertise include teaching and training, customized yoga classes, reiki sessions, meditation and reflective writing sessions to reduce stress, and align mind, body and spirit.  I received my Bachelors in Social Work from Kinnaird College in Pakistan. A Masters in Business Administration from Suffolk University in Boston, USA. I am also a Microsoft Certified Professional and worked in information technology field. I completed my Reiki I, II and Reiki master training from 1995-1997. Did extensive experiential study and training with an International School for Adult Development and Education (PRH)  from 2002-2010.  I have pursued Yoga since 1986 and became a certified yoga instructor in 2006.

I found my husband during a time when I was doing intense prayer, visulizations, native American healing sessions and during Reiki I training. I was praying to have my path be revealed so that I am guided to take my next steps which are in my highest good and in the heighest good of all who are concerned. I was lead and guided to get married in 1995 in the US to a grandson of a great Sufi Scholar.  I am also told that my own great grandfather 's was a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him). Whose shrine is in India where people go to seek solace.

My mother's fgrandparents came from the land of the Rishi's of Kashmir (synonymous for a sage. I myself had a very profound experience at age fourthe age four at a renouned Sufi shrine when i was four years old which I even experience now anytime I recall it and again about twenty years ago. I felt inspired and decided to explore Sufism since 1997 and attended a meditation group during the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

My second Mentor has been Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Seven Pillars' President, is the spiritual leader of the Sufi Order International, a mystical and ecumenical fellowship rooted in the visionary legacy of his grandfather, Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan. Pir Zia is also the President of the Suluk Academy and founder of Seven Pillars House of Wisdom. Pir Zia holds a Doctoral degree in Religion from Duke University and is a recipient of the U Thant Peace Award. In addition to the interfaith mystical training he has received from his father, Pir Zia has studied Buddhism under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Sufism in the classical Indian tradition of the Chishtiyya. He is the editor of the recently published volume, A Pearl in wine: Essays on the Life, Music, and Sufism of Hazrat Inayat Khan. He has also authored two booklets published by the Sufi Order Secretariat: Risala, and the Chishti Silsila of Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan. I met him through a Kripalu (a great meditation center in MA) catalog of programs. He was giving a Sufi meditation course with another Yoga teacher. I had a different kind of vision (Darshan) where I saw his completely illumined face lit up in all white eflugene. Afterwards Pir Aiz invited me and my husband and offered us both a scholorship to attend the inauguratipn of his new organization"The Sever Pillars House of Wisdom' in New Labonan, NY. There at the abode we visited his father's tomb and felt a great sense of peace and solitude.

Living in the US for the past 20 years I've also come to explore various other methods of meditation and healing modalities like Pranic healing, Reiki, Yoga, reflective writing to learn to be faithful to my own being and deep conscience. I have come to a resolve and understanding to respect and stay open to all the methods of arriving. I believe ways are many to the ONE.  I hope you find your own unique way of seeking and live your daily life with vigor, determination, surrender, faith and obedience.

I have had a great fortune and blessing to be with my current Spiritual Master and Guru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi since 2006.  Amma is revered as a Saint and is widely respected for her humanitarian activities. Amma is sometimes referred to as "The Hugging Saint", Ammachi (revered mother) is called a living embodiment of God in a human body by many.

Amma's world-wide charitable mission includes a program to house the homeless, build orphanages, and provide relief-and-rehabilitation in the aftermath of disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami,  free medical care, pensions for widows and disabled people, aid environmental-protection groups, renovate and urbanize slums, build care facilities for the elderly, and offer free food and clothing for the poor. These projects are overseen by various organizations all over the world.  All the organizations collectively are known as Embracing the World.

The majority of work is done by volunteers as a form of spiritual practice. "It is Amma's wish that all of her children should dedicate their lives to spreading love and peace throughout the world. Real love and devotion for God is to have compassion for the poor and the suffering,".  Amma has been giving (darshan) giving hugs and has received people nearly every day since the late 1970s. The size of the crowds coming to seek Amma's blessings have increased, there are times when Amma gives darshan continuously for more than 20 hours. In a conversation recorded in the 2004 book From Amma's Heart, Ammachi says: "As long as these hands can move a little bit and reach out to those who come to her, and as long as there is a little strength and energy to place her hands on a crying person’s shoulder and caress and wipe their tears, Amma will continue giving darshan. To lovingly caress people, console and wipe their tears, until the end of this mortal frame is Amma's wish."

Ammachi does not have any need to establish Her authenticity with anyone. I am fortunate enough to experience the same intense joy in my heart several times after I met Amma that I had experienced at age four. I actually had fallen very ill and loosing weight and thin like a stick. My Aunt brough me finally to this Saint's shrine. I was to eat a tiny bit of mud from the ground which I did and to my great amazement I felt this intense joy in the center of my heart. I felt immediately a great relief, my heart was uplifted and all of the heaviness in my heart and a deep grief was vanished in seconds as soon as this mud touched my tongue. I will share this with you that for a very long time I used to wonder why I feel this positive suttle invisble protection. when I met Ammachi I re-experienced this same intense joy and happiness in the center of my heart after about 4 years but this time Ammachi held my fingertips. It happened exactly the same way decades ago and my life was saved at that time and it has happened several times when Ammachi held my fingertip. I know Amma has remided me of my chilhood experience and I have formed a strong bond with Her. Today my role model Ammachi is what inspires me to spend any time I can make with humanitarian organizations such as the global  "Embracing The World" (amma.org, ammadc.org) local and global community projects and charities.  I have gone through a tremendous inner cleansing, healing and transformation with Her like millions of other's. I hope that you will honor me to accompany you and bring to you what has helped me in my own continuing personal healing and growth journey.
